Rosa studied Biology at the University of Hamburg. During her Diploma and PhD theses at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg in the group of Matthias Leippe she analyzed the antimicrobial and cytolytic arsenal of pathogenic and non-pathogenic protozoa. After moving to the Ruhr-University of Bochum, she obtained a Lise-Meitner stipend and continued examining antimicrobial effector molecules, in particular of the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum. Since 2014 she is working in Pierre’s group at the Leibniz-HKI, where she analyzes the role of polyketides in D. discoideum (e.g. during the development phase). Furthermore, going back to her main interest – the discovery of new antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) – she investigates metagenomic data from ancient bacterial microbiomes derived from prehistoric material for genes coding for putative AMP candidates. These are subsequently structurally and functionally analyzed by modern molecular biology methods.
