Anan studied Pharmacy and Biotechnology at the German University in Cairo, Egypt. After that, she went to Scotland to pursue a Master degree in Biotechnology at the University of Edinburgh (UoE). Anan worked on genome mining for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis from environmental samples from farms formerly infected with Johne’s disease in the labs of Dr. Andrew Free, UoE and Dr. Craig Watkins at the Moredun Research Institute, UK.
Working with environmental DNA became her passion, so she decided to stay in research pursuing a PhD in Life Sciences at University of Konstanz, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Laura Epp, Prof. Dr. David Schleheck and Prof. Dr. Axel Meyer. At this time, she became involved in sedimentary ancient DNA, exploring up to 200 year old sediments using amplicon sequencing to trace the impact of urbanization, industrialization and climate change on the overall microbial community of Lake Constance (aka the Bodensee). She had the opportunity to carry out the project from field sampling right until data analysis.
After completing her PhD, she joined Pierre’s group at the Leibniz-HKI in Jena in April 2021, to work on exploring ancient metagenomes to retrieve natural products from prehistoric samples, e.g. dental calulus. Her current work focuses predominantly on genome mining and the set-up of various Bioinformatics workflows and pipelines.
