Lei was born in Zhejiang, China. He obtained his B. Eng. in Pharmaceutical Engineering from China Pharmaceutical University in 2017. In 2020, he earned his M. Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies from Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, where he conducted his master’s thesis under the supervision of Prof. Harald Gross. His master’s research focused on the purification and structural elucidation of novel congeners from the bactobolin compound family, isolated from Burkholderia strains. In 2021, Lei joined Technische Universität Berlin as a PhD candidate under the guidance of Prof. Roderich Süssmuth. His doctoral research centered on the structure elucidation and biosynthesis of peptide natural products, with a particular emphasis on bioactive secondary metabolites containing β-amino acids.
In June 2026, Lei joined the Stallforth lab to work on the isolation of ancient and bioactive natural products.
